Get ready, Kansas City! The Heart of America Hot Dog Festival is sizzling its way back into town on Saturday, August 9, transforming the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District into a celebration of music, culture, and – of course – hot dogs. Running from 3 to 11 p.m., this beloved summer tradition promises a full day of “Grillin’ and Groovin’” for the entire family.
Now in its 11th year, the festival is organized by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) and has become one of Kansas City’s most highly anticipated summer events. Designed to celebrate the all-American relationship between baseball and hot dogs, the event also serves as a powerful reminder of the cultural and historical impact of the Negro Leagues and its role in shaping America’s pastime.
More Than Just Hot Dogs
This isn’t just a cookout – it’s a culinary and cultural experience. The festival features an impressive variety of hot dog vendors offering classic styles and creative takes on the iconic snack. From traditional ballpark franks to gourmet dogs with regional twists, there’s something for every palate. Guests can expect a vibrant food scene featuring mouthwatering options and an abundance of ice-cold beverages to help beat the summer heat.
“The Heart of America Hot Dog Festival unites fans around that common bond in a fun and entertaining celebration,” shared NLBM President Bob Kendrick. “We’re thrilled to bring the Hot Dog Festival back.”
For foodies and baseball fans alike, this festival is an opportunity to connect history with flavor – honoring a snack that’s been part of the ballpark experience for more than a century.
Live R&B to Light Up the Night
While the hot dogs take center stage on the menu, the entertainment lineup takes over the main stage. This year’s headliners include Eric Benét, Silk, and Rose Royce, delivering smooth R&B sounds as the sun sets over the city. The mix of classic soul and contemporary vibes makes for an unforgettable concert experience under the stars.
The Hot Dog Festival has evolved into a full-blown outdoor music festival, drawing thousands from across the metro area. Kendrick noted the event’s rapid growth:
“It has been tremendously gratifying to see this event grow to become one of the most highly anticipated outdoor music festivals in Kansas City.”
A Celebration of Community and Culture
More than just a music or food festival, the Heart of America Hot Dog Festival is a celebration of Kansas City’s cultural identity. Held in the heart of the 18th & Vine Jazz District – a neighborhood steeped in Black history, music, and resilience – the event pays tribute to the rich legacy of the Negro Leagues, the city’s jazz roots, and the enduring spirit of community.
Whether you’re a longtime Kansas Citian or a first-time visitor, this festival is a chance to come together, enjoy the flavors of summer, dance to iconic tunes, and support a vital cultural institution. Proceeds from the event help fund the NLBM’s ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate Black baseball history, making every bite and beat matter.
